Test Basics Guides

What common markers and panels measure, in plain language.

Test basics cover what common markers and panels actually measure. Knowing what a test looks at helps you choose the right one and understand the report that comes back.

Some tests target a single marker, while others bundle several related measurements into a panel. A panel is often a practical starting point because markers interact, and reading them together can be more informative than reading each alone.

Markers are grouped by what they reflect. Metabolic panels look at blood sugar and electrolytes, lipid panels at cholesterol and triglycerides, thyroid panels at the hormones that regulate metabolism, and so on.

The sample type also varies. Most tests use a blood draw, but some use urine, saliva, or a swab, and each has its own collection and handling requirements that can affect the result.

Before ordering, it helps to know whether a test needs preparation, how long results take, and whether a broader panel would give a more useful picture than a single marker.

The guides below introduce each family of tests in plain language. They are educational only and are not medical advice; ask a qualified healthcare provider which tests are appropriate for you.
